Received a fake copy.Authentic new copies of Pocket Medicine from Wolters Kluwer come with the pages shrink-wrapped and separated from the binder. You have to physically tear open the shrink wrap and put the pages into the binder yourself. Also, the print and ink quality is very good.The copy I received was dirty, had printing defects with the page numbers, and was already preassembled. The ink was also of poor resolution which made the text fuzzy and hard to see.

I have been using Pocket Medicine since being a wee little OMS-3. I can tell you that this thing has been the most amazing reference book in my life. I've seen them all (Washington Manual, UCSF's hospitalist handbook, the ICU book, etc). I'll be honest, being an attending, I've been using uptodate more now than this book but as a medical student/resident, this book is amazing. What makes this book such an amazing reference is that they actually write down the article/journal that they are referencing to if you wish to expand your knowledge base with the original research.I've known the details of this series for many years. See my older reviews on Pocket Medicine to see what I think about the series. Again, for the newcomers, welcome to medicine and if you're looking for a reference book, this shall be your bible. The style is that same Pocket Medicine style with lots of abbreviations, and references. If you are having trouble figuring out what that abbreviation is in the book, check the back of the book. If you can get a copy off your colleague, I recommend taking a look first before jumping the gun and buying it without looking at how this is written. I've seen people be put off by the style and so I recommend doing this first if you're completely unfamiliar with the series. Before, I would be searching things very fast on this book. But given the speed of the uptodate app on my phone, I'll admit I haven't been using this little buddy as much. The pocket book fits in any white coat.Now I will present changes/differences:New sections (not all inclusive): Cardiac Rhythm Management Devices, Toxicology, Lung Transplant, Dysmotility and Nutrition, Disorders of Colon, Intestinal Ischemia. Some of these were renamed sections. I haven't used the book enough to tell you if these changes make a difference if you're thinking about upgrading from purple.New references: qSOFA for sepsis, cardiac risk assessment tables has been slightly simplified (although the basics are the same), JNC 8 is in the book. The controversial lipid guidelines from AHA are in the book now. Ophthalmic issues section has been changed a lot (I liked the purple version better but maybe its because I'm just used to it).Dislikes: the book I bought uses a more similar flimsy paper as in the purple version. I miss the paper they used in green. But what I was really MAD about is that the publisher didn't do a good job at screening the hole punches and it was hole punched slightly off and now the first couple pages have already ripped out. I'm very unhappy about this but I did not subtract a star as the rating is about the content.Bottomline: it's the same old pocket medicine you love and see your colleagues use. Is it worth upgrading? absolutely not. Will I stop buying future issues? I'm thinking this may be the last one I upgrade as I probably use uptodate more often now as an attending but I can appreciate all of the information that is needed to update this little book. Again, borrow one to see if you like the style before buying this.Again, like all of my previous reviews: I didn't get paid by Dr Sabatine or Wolters Kluwer for this review.Also a moment of silence for my purple version. RIP my battered and time tested purple version, RIP.

For my IM clerkship I borrowed this edition from my medical library and used it throughout my rotation. I found it useful and have decided to buy my own because I am going into IM. The copy I bought from Wolcott Books off of Amazon does not look or feel like the one I used from the library (which I currently have checked out and can do a side-by-side comparison). The Wolter's Kluwer logo is misprinted on the front and back cover, and the binder cover feels loose. The printing inside looks blurry and pixelated compared to the one from the library and the ink color is off.I am returning the copy I bought and trying a different seller on Amazon for a higher price. As far as I can tell the content is the same, so for 20 bucks cheaper it would probably be serviceable, but I am willing to pay higher for good quality.(library copy is pictured on the right)

I’m about to start my 3rd year, and bought this after hearing that it is one of the few absolute must-haves for the wards. I was a little weary about getting this from Amazon due to all of the reviews about it being of poor quality. However, I don’t see any of the problems that others have written about. I’m not sure if they addressed the issues or if I just got lucky but I’m very happy with it. The binder seems strong, and the pages fit nicely inside of it, without hanging out at all. The pages are somewhat thin, but they’re not overly flimsy or delicate. I’d prefer them to be thin anyway, though to keep the book as small as possible. The words aren’t so tiny that it’s difficult for me to read, but I can see why more experienced (i.e. older) doctors may have some trouble. Also, after a thorough look through the pages, there were none missing or misprinted. I think it would be a nice touch if they printed a quick table of contents on the inside cover on the binder, or put it on the cover page, but that’s not a big deal. Overall, the book is concise, easy to use, and I can see why it comes so highly recommended. I’ll update this review if anything arises as far as quality or if, once I start using it, I notice any shortcomings.

From Publishers Weekly In 1847, one out of every six women who delivered a baby in the First Division at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus hospital in Vienna died of childbed fever, a situation mirrored at other medical facilities in Europe and the U.S. Bestselling author Nuland (How We Die), a clinical professor of surgery at Yale, details in lively descriptive writing just how Ignac Semmelweis, an assistant physician at Allgemeine Krankenhaus, uncovered the origin of this devastating epidemic. Although theories were advanced that attributed it to unhealthy conditions in the expectant mother's body, Semmelweis launched his own investigation. He traced the high mortality rate from this fever in the First Division to the medical doctors, who went straight from dissecting cadavers to delivering babies without washing their hands; they were, in fact, infecting their own patients. Semmelweis's doctrine was controversial in medical circles, Nuland explains, partly because the eccentric physician's self-destructive personality alienated possible supporters. Drawing on careful research, the author convincingly argues that, contrary to popular myth, Semmelweis was not a persecuted victim but, despite his brilliance, was his own worst enemy. He was committed to a public mental institution and, according to Nuland, probably suffered from Alzheimer's and died from beatings administered by hospital personnel. From The New England Journal of Medicine Many people have heard of Semmelweis, whose fame rests on having shown in the 1840s that deaths from puerperal fever (an infection following childbirth) at the Vienna Lying-in Hospital could be reduced by making doctors and medical students wash their hands in a disinfectant solution before entering the maternity ward. His observations were largely ignored during his lifetime and for many years after his death in 1865. Near the end of the 19th century, however, and especially after the publication of a hagiographic biography in 1909, Semmelweis's reputation was raised to the skies. I know of no one else in the history of medicine whose reputation rose from the extreme of oblivion to reverence as one of medicine's greatest heroes. After he had acquired heroic status, it was asserted that Semmelweis was the first to discover that puerperal fever was contagious, that his work had led to the abolition of puerperal fever, that his now famous treatise, The Etiology, the Concept, and the Prophylaxis of Childbed Fever (1861) (Figure), was one of the greatest medical works of the 19th century, and that lack of support by his colleagues in Vienna drove Semmelweis mad. Since the 1970s, however, a small band of Semmelweis scholars have shown that few of these assertions are correct and that the truth about Semmelweis is much more complex -- and certainly more interesting -- than the conventional picture. That Semmelweis made some brilliant observations in 1847 on the manner in which puerperal fever is transmitted is beyond doubt. But he was his own worst enemy. His dogmatism, arrogance, hostility, and unforgivable rudeness to colleagues who dared to question his views, combined with his failure to publish his findings for 14 years, damaged his reputation. Such revelations prompted Sherwin Nuland to publish a paper entitled "The Enigma of Semmelweis: An Interpretation" in 1979. This book is a welcome expansion of that paper, with important additional information. There is broad agreement within the small group of historians who have studied Semmelweis since the 1970s that he possessed a complex and difficult character and about how his reputation rose from oblivion to fame. There are still disputes about both the nature of the mental illness from which Semmelweis suffered in his last few years and the cause of his death. Nuland, who believes that Semmelweis died as a result of a brutal attack by the staff of the lunatic asylum to which he had been admitted a fortnight before his death, has produced new evidence that supports this theory. But Nuland's certainty that Semmelweis suffered from Alzheimer's disease is not shared by most historians. That he was mentally deranged, or insane, or mad (whichever term you prefer) in his last few years is beyond dispute; but retrospective diagnosis of a mental illness that occurred in the 19th century is so difficult that exactly what illness Semmelweis was affected by may never be known. Unfortunately, this book has no index, no footnotes or endnotes, and only a brief bibliographic note. There are many places where one longs to know the evidence for new data; and there is the problem of the first chapter, which presents a detailed account of a young girl who becomes pregnant, is admitted to the General Hospital of Vienna in 1847, and dies of puerperal fever. The chapter is fictional in style and contains colloquial speech. For instance, a medical student says to the girl, "Please pay attention, young miss!" and the girl says to a nurse, "Please don't tell me I could die having a baby. Oh, please, please, Nurse, I couldn't bear to think of it," to which the nurse replies, "Hush, hush. . . . You'll get yourself all worried and excited for no reason." Because no source is given, I can only assume that part or even the whole of the first chapter is historical fiction. From Booklist Nuland's second excellent book this year (after the superb memoir, Lost in America [BKL N 15 02]) focuses on a physician who, like Nuland in the midst of his career, suffered from severe psychological disease. Unlike Nuland, Ignac Semmelweis (1818-65) probably couldn't have recovered and, in any event, died under odd circumstances days after admission to a mental hospital. Nuland's thoughts about Semmelweis' illness and death are in the final chapter, and waiting for them is eminently worthwhile because of the riveting account of childbed, or puerperal, fever that comes first. Incidence of the bacterial disease attained massive proportions with the rise of the modern hospital and of giving birth there rather than at home, and enormous numbers of newborns as well as mothers perished. As the book's title suggests, dirty doctors (and medical students) spread the disease, for antisepsis and asepsis were unappreciated--indeed, unknown--until, after Semmelweis' death, Pasteur and Lister verified the existence and dangers of germs. A few physicians had figured out the how of puerperal fever before Semmelweis, but his fanaticism for cleanliness in practice at the general hospital in Vienna, the medical capital of Europe, demonstrated huge reductions in the disease. He failed to publish adequately, however, and establishment physicians, wedded to general theories of disease, pooh-poohed his practices, preventing their acceptance elsewhere. About the Author
Gerald Thomas Schuster received his Ph.D. in geophysics from Columbia University in 1984. He took up a faculty position at the University of Utah in 1985, where he is currently Professor of Geophysics and the founder and director of the Utah Tomography and Modeling/Migration (UTAM) consortium of oil, gas, and mining companies. He served as Chief Editor of the journal Geophysics from 2004 to 2005, and was a co-recipient of the 2007 Eotvos prize from the EAGE for the best paper in the journal Geophysical Prospecting. Professor Schuster has been invited to give short courses in seismic imaging and signal processing methods to major petroleum exploration companies throughout the world, and was the invited Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished Lecturer for 1998-1999.
