This book is a revised and enlarged version of the original maquette for Josef Koudelka’s Cikáni (Czech for Gypsies) prepared by Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopřiva in 1968, and intended for publication in Prague in 1970. Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970 after extensively documenting the Russian invasion of Prague in August 1968. The book was never published in that original form.
This extended version consists of 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in what was, at the time, Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. The word Gypsies (the common name for this group when the photographs were taken between 1962 and 1971, before the current term Roma was established) is used as the book title.
Sociologist Will Guy, author of the text that accompanied the first publication of Gypsies, has contributed an updated essay, tracing the migration of the Roma from their original homeland in northern India, to their current status—one that continues to be contested internationally.

About the Author
In 1968, Josef Koudelka photographed the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, publishing these images under the initials P. P. (Prague Photographer). Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970, became stateless, was then granted political asylum in England, and shortly thereafter joined Magnum Photos. Koudelka has published eleven books of photographs focusing on the relationship between contemporary man and the landscape, including Gypsies (1975), Exiles (1988), Black Triangle (1994), Invasion 68: Prague (2008), and Wall (2013). Significant exhibitions of his work have been held at the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Koudelka is the recipient of the Medal of Merit awarded by the Czech Republic (2002) and numerous other awards. In 2012, he was named Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He is based in Paris and Prague.

Will Guy is a research fellow in sociology at the University of Bristol, UK. He contributed the text for the original edition of Gypsies in 1975, while completing his PhD on Czechoslovak Communist policy on Roma. His recent academic research, undertaken on behalf of the European Commission and international NGOs, focuses on the evaluation of initiatives promoting Roma social inclusion. He has published widely on this topic and is editor of two books, Between Past and Future: The Roma of Central and Eastern Europe (2001) and Roma Migration in Europe: Case Studies (2004).

This long book (over 800 pages including an extensive bibliography, notes, acknowledgements, and photos) has taken me more than a month to read, not because itâ€™s boring, but because itâ€™s so intricately detailed. Golda in all her charisma, ambition, strengths and weaknesses, power, and love of Israel comes alive, and there are moments such as the description of the slaying of the Munich Olympic athletes and what the public didnâ€™t know, as well as accounts of the Yom Kippur War, when grief is palpable. There will only be one Golda. She broke the mold. To the reviewer who compared the bookâ€™s quality to Farrellâ€™s recent stellar biography of Richard Nixon, I completely agree.

Biography strikes me as an extremely difficult form of writing. Biographies often suffer from the author's unalloyed admiration, causing them to overlook serious flaws in their subject, or strong dislike, leading to screeds against their subjects. Another frequent flaw is that, having done extensive research on their subjects, biographers feel compelled to overstuff their works with facts, as if to prove that they've done their homework, even though much of what they include is marginal at best.Ms. Klagsbrun's monumental work suffers from neither flaw. She clearly admires Golda Meir -- though in candor I find it hard to believe that anyone would not admire her -- but she doesn't shy away from candor about Meir's failings and flaws, such as her behavior towards her husband and children, her affairs (though Ms. Klagsbrun wisely avoids details), her stubbornness, etc. Nor does the book force the reader to wade through tons of extraneous facts. That's pretty remarkable, since at nearly 700 pages (in fairly small font), the book is huge. In this regard, it's important to note that the subtitle of the book is "Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel" -- and both topics are amply but appropriately addressed.It's extremely well written and well organized, though there are a few cases where Ms. Klagsbrun gets ahead of herself -- for example, where she talks about the impact of Meir's heart attack but hasn't mentioned it previously, forcing me to go to the index to see if I'd missed something. (I hadn't.) Also, though the book starts out with Ms. Klagsbrun's observation that Golda is far more admired outside of Israel than within her country, she never really explains why this has happened. I also wish that Ms. Klagsbrun had included a glossary of the various political parties, groups and movements that are referred to in the book; for someone who's not all that familiar with Israeli political history, the various groups and their views became a bit of a swamp for me. (In contrast, there is a "cast of characters" at the outset of the book that was helpful if a bit overinclusive.) My last quibble with the book, though admittedly an extremely minor one, is that I would have loved a section or possibly a postscript that contained Ms. Meir's best witticisms; they are sprinkled throughout the book, but some are left out, and a separate section would have been delightful.But these are minor criticisms and quibbles. I'll stick with my view that this is a monumental, wonderful and important book. Bravo!

In 1975 I read â€œMy Lifeâ€ by Golda Meir. To date Francine Klagsbrun has written the most definitive biography of Golda Meir. The book arrives at a propitious time in history. It has been seventy years since Israel became an independent state. Hostility with the Arab world is increasing as is worldwide anti-Semitism. Forty years after her death Golda is still universally known as the most important Jewish woman of the 20th century.I found it interesting that Klagsbrun pointed out that Golda is more popular in American and the rest of the world than in Israel. Klagsbrun goes beyond the previous biographies by placing Goldaâ€™s personal life against the backdrop of the emergence of Israel.The book is well written and meticulously researched. The author interviewed Goldaâ€™s son, and daughter, along with other family members, her personal assistant and bodyguards. Klagsbrun also reviewed thousands of documents, minutes of the American, Israeli, British and Russian government meetings, personal papers, diaries and recently declassified materials. Golda served as Israelâ€™s Ambassador to the Soviet Union, Labor Minister, Foreign Minister and as Prime Minister. Klagsbrun points out Goldaâ€™s political shrewdness and achievements as well as her failings. She did not see the rise in nationalism amongst the Arab population. She failed to overcome the feelings of the Sephardic Jews of being second class citizens. Golda led the shift away from socialism to capitalist-oriented economy. I found it interesting that Klagsbrun pointed out that men are called by their last name but women public figures are referred to by their first name to show a lesser position. I learned so much about Golda and Israel from this book. I highly recommend it.I read this as an e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad. The book is 848 pages. It was published October 17, 2017 by Schocker Publishing.

I have read quite a few books about the history of Israel, and biographies of its prime ministers. Most have been well worthwhile. But Klagsbrun's "Lioness" is outstanding, combining an easy-to-read writing style with many interesting insights into the politics of Israeli history and a thoughtful biography of a very human and fascinating woman. My only regret: the book was not twice as long!

Winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award, this biography is anything but dryly factual. It is extremely well-researched, and the writing reads easily in an almost novel-like smoothness. Both in its excellent analysis and its anecdotal freedom, this biography - which may well be THE definitive biography of Mier, is both informative and a delight to read.

I read this book in 3 hours. Next day I was still smoking. I was disappointed. Then less than a week later it's like the words soaked in. I quit smoking April 8th. Cold turkey. I am 47 years old and started smoking when I was 14. I have been a non smoker for 2 1/2 months now. Woohoo! This book and prayer really does work. You just have to keep reading and keep praying until the end. As I was reading it, I kept thinking to myself 'there is no way this is going to work' but it really did. I actually even quit before I got to the end of the book but I still finished reading it. If you are truly serious about quitting this is the way to go. It is really easy and didn't bother me a bit. It did take my brain some time to catch up with the fact that I didn't smoke any more. For instance, on my way home from work, I'd reach for my purse to see if I needed to stop and get cigarettes (Oh Wait! I don't smoke anymore, silly girl ...LOL) Or I'd reach for a cigarette to light when I reached a certain road I was traveling on (Again! Hey I don't smoke!) The only other down fall is that I did gain 10lbs. I really watched that my eating didn't change and it didn't but I still put on the 10lbs. The Nicotine, I believe does really affect your metabolism. So now I'm working on getting the 10lbs off. I believe in you, you can do it! Read the book and become a healthier and better smelling you! :) YES, I said better smelling you because cigarettes really do make you stink. You don't realize until you quit and smell it on others.
